In the Pokemon games you are able to develop different strategies and challenges to accomplish your ultimate goal of being Pokemon master. With the main objective being to catch and train Pokemon in order to topple gyms and the elite four, you find yourself asking ‘How should I do it?’. Well, if you are wanting to be more defensive and play shenanigans, this is definitely the article to read.
First let’s discuss what a defensive Pokemon does. Most of the time a defensive Pokemon has two different play styles. One is the defensive beater, one that has higher defensive stats than attacking stats, but will whittle at the opponent’s health with attacks as they hit a brick wall with theirs. The other is the stall win defensive Pokemon. They inflict status effects and either switches to physically strong sweepers, or just inflicts toxic and uses protect or restorative moves till it is game over for the other trainer.
So, we wrote this article to give you a list of some of the best defensive Pokemon in the Pokemon games. These Pokemon are based on our opinions and should not be misconstrued as the overall best in all of the games. Enjoy our list and let us know what you think in the comments below.
Shuckle
This Pokemon was introduced in the second generation of Pokemon games, given to you by a man who was robbed of one of his prized Pokemon. It is bug/rock, and its defense stats are some of the best in the game. He is best used as a stall/countering Pokemon.
Umbreon
Also introduced in the second generation of Pokemon games, Umbreon is a pure dark tank. It’s defense stats are fairly high with moderate attack stats to back up its tankyness in most Pokemon battles. Best used as a tank, if you didn’t catch the drift, while dealing moderate damage to your opponent.
Forretress
Not a common Pokemon to see in competitive play, this bug/steel type Pokemon still holds some of the highest defenses in the game. A major weakness to fire prevents it from being practically used in competitive, but it is best used as a debilitating tank that smacks hard with a u-turn into something beastly.
Blissey
This is Pokemon is commonly known as a wall. It stands in your way of victory and there is nothing you can do about it. With an amazingly generous HP and recovery moves, this Pokemon can make you wish you hadn’t overlooked using a fighting type. Even with a fighting type, Blissey is a wall. A steel wall that isn’t steel.
Metagross
A pseudo psychic/steel tank that has 9 resistances and amazing attack stat… this is the god of defensive Pokemon. Just avoid earthquake.
There you have it, the best defensive Pokemon you can use in any Pokemon game including competitive play. If you like what you see, check out our other articles.
